Walkable Communities
- 8 AM- 5 PM
This highly visual, information two-day workshop sponsored by PAG (Pima Association
of Goverments) will cover how to make your community more pedestrian-friendly,
presented by one of America’s leading experts in the field, Dan Burden. This
workshop will help bring about a sense of place, individual town character,
civic pride, respect for government, trust, and a celebration of the public
spirit. The Walkable Communities Workshop bridges the gap between the lay person
and the professional.

Wednesday, November 14
AASHTO, MUTCD, & UVC Bicycle Workshop - 8 AM - 5 PM
Matthew Zoll and Mia Birk of Alta Transportation Consulting present a one-day
training course for transportation professionals that focuses on recent changes
to the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities. Also covered
are changes to bicycle and pedestrian provisions of the Federal-Aid Program
as amended by TEA-21, the MUTCD and the Uniform Vehicle Code.
Thursday, November 15
Nutrition Workshop:"Eating for More Energy and Less Stress"
- 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Join Dan Johnson, Executive Director of Wellness Council of Tucson, for an informative
presentation on food and stress. Learn which foods aggravate our stress response
and which foods help us increase our energy levels. For information call Wellness

Handcycling Workshop - 1 PM - 2 PM
Meet local handcyclists, including U.S. National Handcycle Team member Greg
Hockenmsith, and learn about all the exciting developments that are occurring
locally and all around the country with this exciting new sport. Hear training
tips from the experts and discuss topics such as how to prepare for long rides,
how to ride in large bike packs and traffic, and how to choose which is the
best handcycle for you. Handcycles will be available for individuals of all
levels of ability to see and tryout.
Air Pollution Workshop - 2:10 PM - 3:10 PM
Bicyclists share the road with the greatest polluter - motor vehicles. Beth
Gorman, Program Manager of the Pima County Dept. of Environmental Quality, discusses
the short and long term health affects of air pollution; how can air pollution
affect your performance; and how you can access air pollution levels before
your ride.
Friday, November 16
Bicycle-Pedestrian Collision Workshop - 8 AM - 11:30 AM
This workshop will help you understand and know how to reduce bicycle and pedestrian
collisions with motor vehicles. Factual data on Arizona & Tucson area collisions
and their causative factors will be presented by Richard Moeur & Richard
Corbett, nationally recognized experts in the field, along with suggested countermeasures.
The Tucson Experience Workshop - 1 PM - 3 PM
Learn everything there is to know about organizing and promoting a community
Bike Week. Gain valuable information on marketing strategies, media coverage,
and fun activities for the entire community. Pima County Environmental Specialists
explain how Tucson’s Walk to School event grew from 1,400 kids, families and
school staff the first year to 5,000 the second. Get your community on board
with this international program to encourage safe routes to school, better health
and cleaner air.

How to Organize a Bike Patrol Workshop - 3 PM to 4 PM
When mishaps occur during a bicycling event, among the most effective responses
comes from are volunteer Bike Patrol members who ride alongside participants.
Learn how to develop a Bike Patrol program, proper training of volunteers, and
the important role of Bike Patrol in keeping events safe. Conducted by Richard
E Corbett, El Tour Bike Patrol Director, with 15 years Bike Patrol experience.
Continued in the next session (Bike Patrol Training, 4:30 to 6:00 PM).
Bike Patrol Training Session - 4:30 PM - 6 PM
This is both a Bike Patrol Basic Training session for out-of-state and Arizona
non-metro area Bike Patrol volunteers that who have been unable to attend local
workshops, and a continuation of the How to Organize a Bike Patrol Workshop.
This training will certify volunteers to participate in Bike Patrol for El Tour
de Tucson 2001 on Saturday, November 17. Conducted by Richard E Corbett, El
Tour Bike Patrol Director.
