A Surprisingly Chilly Start for
Holualoa Companies 25th Tour of the Tucson Mountains presented by Town of Marana

TUCSON, Ariz. – Richard DeBernardis, Founder & Executive Director, announced that 1,142 event participants were treated to a chilly start with winds from the southeast – a beautiful day that eventually warmed considerably.

This year’s event was dedicated to Tucsonan Roy Schoonover who has been opening the eyes and ears of elected officials to the bicycling needs of the community ever since 1986, following a 31-year career with IBM.

Beginning and ending at the Marana Town Hall, Jake Rubelt from Tucson, out-sprinted fellow Tucsonan Justin Orkney by less than a second to claim the individual men’s title in a time of 2:47:05. Ernesto Yberri from Hermosillo rounded out the men’s podium in a time of 2:47:08.

Tucsonan Chrissy Parks placed first for women in a time of 2:47:11, out-sprinting Gwen Inglis from Lakewood, CO by three seconds. Sabrina Forbes from Ridgefield, WA was close behind, rounding out the women’s podium in a time of 2:47:17.

Butch and Caren Jackson from Tucson captured the tandem title in 2:47:13 as they finished in the midst of a large peloton of sixty-four cyclists. Tucsonans Darien Newman and Michael Coyle placed first in the men’s tandem division in a time of 2:47:21 while Debbie Williams from Green Valley and fifteen-year-old daughter Elysha Wyrsch took the women’s tandem division in a time of 4:07:37.

Men’s 27-mile defending champion, David Murray of Phoenix, placed first for the fourth year in a row in a time of 1:16:09. Ginger Cross was awarded the women’s 27-mile title, finishing in 1:16:12 along with husband Eric. Last year’s event was dedicated to Ginger and Eric who were married during the 2000 event.

The Pizza Hut Fun Ride delighted nearly 100 kids and their parents as they rode either the 4-mile or the ¼-mile course on flat roads surrounded by the beautiful Marana countryside.

This year’s event grossed nearly $13,000 and will benefit the University of Arizona Alumni Association, UPH Children’s Center at Kino Campus, TMC For Children, Pima Community College Foundation, Marana Community Food Bank and other Perimeter Bicycling charities. Since its inception, the event has welcomed over 22,000 participants and raised nearly $325,000.

The 2011 event was also supported by Ajo Bikes, CEP Timing, Citi, Clif Bar, DakotaPro.Biz, Greater Arizona Bicycling Association, GU, Highway Technologies, Metro Restaurants, 19 South Racing – Nogales, The Bagelry, Tucson Home Magazine and Wells Fargo Bank.

Perimeter Bicycling also organizes the El Tour 10K/5K Run, September 17th, Cochise County Cycling Classic, October 8th and University Medical Center El Tour de Tucson, November 19th.
